RICHMOND, VA— Absentee voting for the June 21 primary elections begins on Friday, May 6, 2022. Not every voter resides within a district holding a June 2022 primary election. If a voter is unsure whether they are eligible to vote in a June 2022 primary election, they can contact their local general registrar using the information at elections.virginia.gov/localGR.

“I am grateful to our local registrars and the team at the Department of Elections for their tremendous collaboration to prepare Virginia for this primary election, said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “The delayed timelines on redistricting presented an enormous challenge, and these public servants showed their dedication to the electoral process by working long hours through many nights and weekends to ensure Virginia would be ready for early voters on May 6.”

Any registered voter who is eligible to vote in a June primary election is entitled to vote by absentee ballot. Virginia provides two ways to vote absentee: absentee by-mail or absentee in-person. Voters can cast in-person absentee ballots beginning 45 days before Election Day at either their local general registrar’s office or at any absentee voting satellite office in their locality. The last day to vote absentee in-person is Saturday, June 18, 2022 at 5:00 p.m.

Voters wishing to cast an absentee ballot by mail may request a ballot on the Department of Elections website, using the following link elections.virginia.gov/voterInformation. Voters should note that by-mail ballots must be returned in the envelope provided by their local general registrars. These envelopes must be signed by both the voter and a witness.

The last day to request an absentee ballot by mail is Friday, June 10, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. Absentee ballots returned by mail must be postmarked by Election Day, June 21, 2022 and received by the local general registrar’s office by noon on Friday, June 24, 2022. Voters can also return their marked and sealed ballots at any absentee ballot drop-off location in their locality. Drop-off locations at polling places close at 7:00 p.m. on Election Day.

Voters who are blind, low vision, or have impaired manual dexterity have the option to receive their absentee ballots via email and to vote using an electronic ballot marking tool. Voters can find more information about accessible voting options at elections.virginia.gov/accessible.
